And writing a song for a “Winnie the Pooh” movie is just as daunting a task, because it requires a songwriter to follow in the footsteps of Richard and Robert Sherman, who penned the well-known “Pooh” theme song and also wrote “Chim Chim Cher-ee,” “Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious,” “It’s a Small World” and “I Wan’na Be Like You,” among many others.

“The tradition of music in Disney animated films is pretty spectacular. But I tried not to think about it, because I might be overwhelmed if I did,” said actress and singer-songwriter Zooey Deschanel, who couldn’t exactly ignore that history when she was drafted to contribute to this year’s Disney version of the A.A. Milne stories.

Her initial task, after all, was to record a new version of the Sherman brothers’ theme song. When that went well, she was asked to write and record an end-credits song, which turned out to be “So Long,” one of the film’s two Oscar entries. And after that, she was asked to contribute vocals to other songs in the film … all while finishing a tour with her band, She and Him, and getting ready to begin filming her new TV series, “The New Girl.”

“It kind of happened in little bits and pieces over the course of the year,” Deschanel told TheWrap.

“That’s the thing with music for me. Songwriting was always something that I did in my private time as a release, very much on my own. It didn’t come out into the world until later in my life. But now, as my schedule has gotten so weird and so busy, I feel like I need to keep going back to it.”

Deschanel first got involved with “Winnie the Pooh” when music supervisor Tom McDougall showed her a 10-minute segment that had been cut to a She and Him song, and asked if she’d record the title song. She enlisted bandmate Matt Ward (who goes by M. Ward) to produce, and settled on an approach to a song whose original version was recorded by a large chorus of anonymous singers.

“I think there was something that Matt and I saw in that song that we could pull out, that wasn’t really focused on in the original recording,” she said. “That was the warmth and the intimacy of the song.

We wanted it to feel very warm and sweet. I felt like it should welcome people into the story.”

Her Oscar entry “So Long,” though, ushers viewers out of the story through its placement in the final credits. “They showed me a rough cut of the movie, so I knew what was leading up to that song,” she said. “I knew that I wanted to write a love song, but about friendship love.”

Her models, she said, came from albums she loved both as a kid and as an adult: Harry Nilsson’s “The Point,” Carole King’s “Really Rosie” and the compilation “Free to Be … You and Me.”

“I listened to all of those again,” she said. “They all had classic chord progressions and catchy melodies with good lyrical hooks and very strong choruses. I wanted a song that was upbeat and made you feel happy walking out of the theater, and also one that kids would enjoy.”

The discipline, she added, was dramatically different from writing for her own band, in which she’s free to tackle any subject and take any approach.

“There’s something overwhelming about being able to write about anything, which I can do in She and Him,” she said. “This was like cracking a code. I had to think, ‘How do I accomplish all these things for the movie, how do I tell the story without getting too literal or writing something totally off-topic?’

“But once I did crack the code, it was inspiring. And the movie people pretty much let me do my thing. They were extremely cool about letting me have my creative moment with the song.”

So far, she adds, there’s just one additional thing she’d like out of the experience — and it’s not an Oscar nomination, but a face-to-face with her predecessors in the “Winnie the Pooh” songwriting gig.

“I haven’t met the Sherman brothers yet,” she says. “I would love to, I’m such a fan.”

She’s losing staff. She’s faced calls for her to abandon her bid. And she has no money.

Yet, the Minnesota congresswoman, at the back of the pack in polls, is vowing to soldier on, even if that means her candidacy will split the vote of pivotal conservatives in Iowa and allow for victories by a candidate who isn’t seen as adhering as strongly to GOP orthodoxy ? like Mitt Romney or Ron Paul.

“Nobody’s working harder,” Bachmann says, declaring her campaign “strong” and suggesting that sheer hustle will carry her to victory.

Regarded as a tea party heroine, the only woman in the Republican race has struggled to revive her campaign since her standing dropped shortly after she won a statewide test vote in Iowa. That turned out to be the high point of her campaign.

She’s spent the final week before Iowa’s caucuses on a bus tour of the state’s 99 counties. On Thursday, she passed around pieces of cake to diners in the town of Nevada to mark the end of the tour that had her cramming in 10 or more meet-and-greets a day in cafes, bowling alleys and pizza shops. Sometimes the crowds barely registered double digits; in other places they spilled out the doors.

But instead of ending the exhausting sprint on a high note, Bachmann found herself facing a new reality: Rick Santorum was the conservative candidate whose standing was rising ahead of the caucuses, not her.

She also found herself feuding with high-level advisers, only the latest to abandon her.

Two top Iowa advisers left the campaign on successive days this week, with her state chairman, Kent Sorenson, quitting and then going so far as to endorse Paul within hours of campaigning with her. A day later, Wes Enos said he was leaving his job as Bachmann’s political director.

Furious, Bachmann spent much of Thursday accusing Sorenson of switching allegiances for money. He denied it. But the candidate found herself in a daylong spat rather than hammering home her closing message to voters.

To some, it was another sign of a campaign in free-fall.

“If you can’t get your campaign on one page, it’s really hard to think you’re going to get a country on one page. The timing is horrible,” said veteran Iowa Republican strategist David Roederer, who is unaffiliated in this year’s race but held top Iowa posts in John McCain’s 2008 campaign and George W. Bush’s 2000 bid.

It didn’t help that the departures came on top of calls by some Iowa pastors that either she or Santorum leave the race so evangelical voters can consolidate their support and block a victory by Romney or Paul. She quickly rejected the plea.

Brad Cranston, a pastor from Burlington who originally liked the idea of a merged campaign, said he’s given up on that prospect and will stick with Bachmann. So will Pastor Bill Tvedt of Oskaloosa, even if he knows her chances of winning have taken a hit.

“Maybe she is out of the running at this point,” Tvedt said. “I think she can come back. To bail out on the basis of electability is self-defeating to the process.”

But even if she stays in the race through Tuesday, it’s doubtful she could sustain a campaign beyond that.

Despite her reputation as a prolific fundraiser, she’s virtually out of money. Bachmann didn’t air a single TV ad in December and won’t broadcast one until the day before the caucuses.

Instead, she’s rolling out Internet videos, like the one she filmed this week that cast her as the “Iron Lady” of the 21st century.

And she’s urging Republicans on the fence to ignore her stagnant or slipping poll numbers ? and Santorum’s rise.

It’s unclear whether she’s having any luck.

Recent college graduate Adam Fischer sized up Bachmann in central Iowa and liked her solidly conservative voting record, but he said he may still opt for Santorum.

“I don’t want to become subject to that poll mentality because that’s what gets us weak candidates,” Fischer said. Then he acknowledged that the one with the head of steam come Tuesday will probably get his vote.

The Suncoast Primate Sanctuary in Palm Harbor announced that Cheetah died Dec. 24 of kidney failure.

Sanctuary outreach director Debbie Cobb on Wednesday told The Tampa Tribune ( http://bit.ly/rRuTeJ) that Cheetah was outgoing, loved finger painting and liked to see people laugh. She says he seemed to be tuned into human feelings.

Based on the works of author Edgar Rice Burroughs, the Tarzan stories, which have spawned scores of books and films over the years, chronicle the adventures of a man who was raised by apes in Africa.

Cheetah was the comic relief in the Tarzan films that starred American Olympic gold medal swimmer Johnny Weissmuller. Cobb says Cheetah came to the sanctuary from Weissmuller’s estate sometime around 1960.

Cobb says Cheetah wasn’t a troublemaker. Still, sanctuary volunteer Ron Priest says that when the chimp didn’t like what was going on, he would throw feces.

Italy raised euro10.7 billion ($14 billion) in a pair of auctions at sharply lower rates than those it was forced to pay just a month ago when investor concerns over the ability of the country to service its massive debts became particularly acute and effectively prompted a change in government.

The sharp decline in Italy’s borrowing costs could be a signal that commercial banks from the 17 countries that use the euro diverted some of the money they tapped from emergency loans from the European Central Bank last week to buy the bonds of heavily indebted governments. It may also suggest rising investor confidence in Italy’s recent efforts to reduce its long-term debt through a variety of austerity measures.

The Bank of Italy said the average yield on its euro9 billion ($11.8 billion) six-month bill offering was 3.251 percent, half the 6.504 percent rate it had to pay at the equivalent auction last month. And an auction of two-year bonds, which raised euro1.7 billion ($2.2 billion), also saw the yield fall to 4.853 percent from 7.814 percent last month.

“This is an encouraging development, suggesting that the Italian sovereign debt market has pulled back from the dangerous situation in late November,” said Raj Badiani, a senior economist at IHS Global Insight.

“The calmer environment reflects the passing of additional austerity measures and some welcome progress on the structural reform agenda, coupled with the ECB’s decision to provide additional cheap financing to Italian banks,” Badiani added.

After initially cheering the auction results, sentiment in markets deteriorated sharply in risk-averse trading following a weaker than anticipated performance on Wall Street.

While Italy’s FTSE MIB fell in line with other stock markets, the euro slid to $1.2938, its lowest level since Jan. 11 and the yield on Italy’s benchmark ten-year bonds pushed back towards the 7 percent mark that is widely considered to be unsustainable in the long-run. Further insights into the level of demand for Italy’s ten-year bonds will emerge in an auction Thursday.

Italy is the eurozone’s third-largest economy and is considered too big to save under the eurozone’s current bailout funds. Markets have grown fearful over the past few months that Italy will find it difficult to pay off its massive debts, which stand at around euro1.9 trillion ($2.5 trillion). Next year alone, Italy has some euro330 billion ($431 billion) of debt to refinance.

Mario Monti, the country’s new premier, got parliamentary approval last week for more spending cuts and tax increases intended to save the country from financial disaster. One of the most controversial aspects of the austerity package is reform of Italy’s bloated pension system.

As well as possibly indicating increased confidence that Monti’s efforts will keep the country’s finances on a sustainable path, Wednesday’s auctions could also have been supported as well by a large infusion of credit to eurozone banks last week from the European Central Bank. A week ago, 523 banks took the opportunity to swell their coffers by euro489 billion ($639 billion), the largest ECB loan operation in the 13-year history of the euro.

There has been speculation that the stronger banks might use the cheap, long-term loans ? on which the current interest rate is 1 percent ? to purchase government bonds that carry higher interest rates and profit from the difference.

That could support both government and bank finances. But it would run contrary to efforts by many banks to lower their exposure to bonds issued by heavily indebted governments.

While some banks may be using the money they got from the ECB to buy up government debt, many others appear to have opted for a much safer option ? depositing their new cash back with the central bank. Figures Wednesday showed eurozone banks parked a record euro452 billon ($591 billion) overnight at the bank Tuesday, surpassing the previous record of euro411.80 billion set only Monday.

MSCI’s broadest index of Asia Pacific shares outside Japan (.MIAPJ0000PUS) slipped 0.3 percent. It is down 17 percent for the year, far less than the 50 percent plunge it had in 2008 when the collapse of Lehman Brothers roiled global financial markets.

Japan’s Nikkei stock average (.N225) closed down 0.5 percent in light trading. The Tokyo benchmark is down 17 percent this year. (.T)

Markets in Hong Kong, Australia and U.K. remained closed on Tuesday.

Other European markets were likely to open slightly up, with financial spreadbetters expecting both Frankfurt’s DAX (.GDAXI) and Paris’ CAC-40 (.FCHI) to begin 0.3 percent higher.

“With U.S. and European players in holiday mood, there is no incentive except for year-end position adjustments,” said Hirokazu Yuihama, senior strategist at Daiwa Capital Markets.

“The markets are in a lull now due to holidays, but concerns about the euro zone debt will resurface early next year, with the focus on refinancing needs facing Italy and Spain, and whether sovereign yields of these countries would shoot above levels considered unsustainable,” he said.

Bank of Japan minutes for its November 15-16 meeting, released on Tuesday, showed that BOJ board members were worried that unstable global financial markets were affecting Japan’s markets to some extent.

The euro inched up 0.1 percent to $1.3074, staying well above its 11-month trough of $1.2945 hit earlier this month.

At this level, the single currency was set for a quarterly loss of about 2 percent, compared with its 7.7 percent decline in the third quarter when the euro came under heavy selling as fears of Greek default intensified.

Deteriorating confidence in the European financial sector forced European banks to reduce assets in order to bolster their fragile capital, weighing on Asian equities markets given their huge exposure to the Asian region.

With its 17 percent drop in 2011, MSCI’s pan-Asian index has underperformed the pan-European FTSEurofirst 300 (.FTEU3) index of top shares, which is down 12 percent.

HOPES FOR THE U.S.

On Monday, when more markets were closed, Japanese and Indian stocks outperformed the rest of Asia in thin trade, with sentiment partly lifted by signs of U.S. economic recovery.

U.S. holiday season sales were expected to rise 3.8 percent to a record $469.1 billion, the National Retail Federation said, slower than last year’s growth but stronger than its preseason forecast.

The potential brisk sales could reinforce emerging views that the U.S. economy is strengthening fundamentally, and follows recent data showing improvement the labor market. The number of Americans filing new claims for jobless benefits hit a 3-1/2-year low in the week shortly before Christmas while consumer sentiment reached a six-month high in December.

Investors will be looking for more positive signs when reports are released about the S&P Case-Shiller house price index for October and consumer confidence for December .

Sentiment has been underpinned by solid performances in U.S. equities, and strong data could help global markets end the year with a positive tone.

The broad Standard & Poor’s 500 Index (.SPX) on Friday broke through its 200-day moving average after a four-day rally lifted stocks to bring the index into positive territory. The Dow Jones industrial average (.DJI) rose to its highest in five months, leaving it up 6 percent for the year.

Aside from the Dow Jones industrial average, U.S. crude oil futures and gold were among top performers, with year-to-date rises of about 9 percent and 12 percent respectively.

The yen, with a yearly rise of 4 percent, has outperformed the dollar index <.DXY=> which was up 1 percent as measured against a basket of six major currencies.

Aside from the euro and the Nikkei, underperformers included industrial metals such as a 22 percent decline in copper and a 19 percent drop for platinum so far this year.

SYDNEY (AP) ? A giant saltwater crocodile named Elvis with an apparent affinity for household machinery charged at an Australian reptile park worker Wednesday before stealing his lawn mower.

Tim Faulkner, operations manager at the Australian Reptile Park, north of Sydney, was one of three workers tending to the lawn in Elvis’ enclosure when he heard reptile keeper Billy Collett let out a yelp. Faulkner looked up to see the 16-foot (5-meter), 1,100-pound (500-kilogram) crocodile lunging out of its lagoon at Collett, who warded the creature off with his mower.

“Before we knew it, the croc had the mower above his head,” Faulkner said. “He got his jaws around the top of the mower and picked it up and took it underwater with him.”

The workers quickly left the enclosure. Elvis, meanwhile, showed no signs of relinquishing his new toy and sat guarding it closely all morning.

Eventually, Faulkner realized he had no other choice but to go back in after the mower.

Collett lured Elvis to the opposite end of the lagoon with a heaping helping of kangaroo meat while Faulkner plunged, fully clothed, into the water. Before grabbing the mower, however, he had to search the bottom of the lagoon for two 3-inch (7-centimeter) teeth Elvis lost during the encounter. He quickly found them and escaped from the pool, unharmed and with mower in tow.

Though many may question the wisdom of going after a couple of teeth with a massive crocodile lurking just feet away, Faulkner said finding them was critical. “They clog up the filter systems,” he said.

And, perhaps more important, he said, “They’re a nice souvenir.”

Elvis has a history of cranky behavior and has occasionally lunged at staff before, though this is the first time he has stolen something from one of the workers. The croc was initially captured in the northern Australian city of Darwin, where he had been attacking fishing boats. He was then moved to a crocodile farm, where he proceeded to kill his two crocodile girlfriends.

In 2008, he was moved to the reptile park, where he has enjoyed solitary confinement in his own enclosure.

“When they are the dominant croc, they’re just full of testosterone,” Faulkner said. “He’s got his beautiful own yard, he wants to be a solitary creature. He’s happy.”

Despite having to give up the lawn mower, Elvis was clearly pleased with himself, Faulkner said.

“He’s beaten us today … he’s kingpin,” Faulkner said. “He’s going to be walking around with his chest puffed out all day.”

As for the staff at the reptile park?

“I can’t lie, the bosses are not going to be happy about the cost of a new lawn mower,” Faulkner said with a laugh. “(But) we love it. No one’s injured … and when you get scared and it all turns out to be good, it’s actually quite enjoyable.”
